Sustainability is a word you should not be a stranger to. It emphasises meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future generation. In this article, we will be exploring two of the Singapore government’s sustainability directives and how they impact your job search.

On the global stage, Singapore is committed to the United Nations goals on sustainable development. This culminated in the Singapore Green Plan 2030 which was unveiled on 10 Feb 2021. Charting Singapore’s green targets for the next 10 years, the SG Green Plan is a national sustainability movement which seeks to rally collective action from the private sector and the public to tackle climate change. The plan is five-pronged: it aims to build a city in nature, sustainable living, energy reset, a green economy, and a resilient future. These specific strategies under the SG Green Plan have implications on your job search, which we will be elaborating on shortly.

Apart from the SG Green Plan, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has been championing sustainable finance. Sustainable finance integrates environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria into financial services to achieve sustainable development goals such as mitigating the effects of climate change. Ravi Menon, the Managing Director of MAS announced that “MAS is working on a comprehensive, long-term strategy to make sustainable finance a defining feature of Singapore’s role as an international financial centre, just as wealth management and FinTech have become.” Directly or indirectly, Singapore’s emphasis on sustainability does have ripple effects on jobs.
